The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance:

  1. Gives full support to the General Assembly of the United Nations in its proclaiming 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons with the keynote theme, “full participation and equality,” whose aim is to encourage the rehabilitation of an estimated 450 million people who suffer from some form of physical or mental impairment.
  2. Upholds the five principal objectives of the Year as set out in the General Assembly resolution:
    • To help disabled persons in their physical and psychological adjustment to society;
    • To promote all national and international efforts to provide them with proper assistance, etc., and to ensure their full integration into society;
    • To encourage study and research to facilitate their practical participation in daily life;
    • To educate and inform the public of their right to participate in the life and the community, and
    • To promote effective measures for the prevention of disability and for the rehabilitation of disabled persons.
  3. Urges the world-wide Baptist community to avail itself of every opportunity to make these objectives become real in their own immediate society and in others, and
  4. Encourages the governments of the nations to pursue with vigor the provisions and activities advocated by the Advisory Committee representative of twenty-three member states.
