BWA World Congress Resolution 1985.1
This 15th Baptist World Congress 1985 takes note of the 40th anniversary of the United Nations this year and records with gratitude the many UN activities in addition to seeking peace which are directed to improving the quality of life among the nations of the world.
We particularly commend the efforts of the United Nations and its related agencies aimed at:
(a) the improvement of world health;
(b) the curtailment of drug traffic and abuse;
(c) greater self-sufficiency and an improving standard of living for developing countries;
(d) disaster relief and aid for refugees from both human and natural disasters;
(e) the improvement of food production and economic distribution for the hungry and poor in the world;
(f) the reduction and ultimate elimination of racial discrimination in all its forms;
(g) greater adherence by all nations to its charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We affirm that such goals are in line with the ethical teaching of the Old Testament prophets and the Ten Commandments and with the message of the Kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus and the Apostles.
We therefore reaffirm the pledge made by the 1947 Baptist World Congress to implement by word an action through every appropriate channel the noble purposes of the United Nations.
We value our continuing opportunity and responsibility of consultancy status, and therefore we call upon the Baptist World Alliance, its Conventions, Unions and Churches, to use the 40th anniversary as an opportunity to:
(a) Make a new commitment of prayer for the United Nations;
(b) Promote interest and support for the organization and its programs;
(c) Encourage worldwide rededication to the principles and purposes of its charter.
